Solar System (To Scale)

Solar System (To Scale)

This model of the sun and eight planets is to-scale, 348,000km to 1'. The sun is 4' in diameter, the Earth 0.9mm. When arranged, the furthest planet out, Neptune, is situated 1/3 mile away from the sun.

Planets and Dish

I created the planets from clay using calipers to measure their diameter. Mercury had to be re-created several times after accidentally blowing it away.

two subjects of this painting is the Earth, our home, and the inky blackness of space. Astronaut Dave Wolf has described space as, "blacker than any black you thought it could be." As a painter, I learned long ago that beautiful, alive shadows are never rendered in black and instead a darker hue of local color, one complimentary to the object, or a shade of blue is used. Here I have applied 10 layers of varnish and Ultramarine to convey the depth of the void.
