One Saturday morning when I was 7, I decided to draw a picture of the solar system using the real orbits and sizes from the science poster in my room. After I had adjusted and re-adjusted my scale for an hour, I found that, not only wasn’t the solar system going to fit on my sheet of paper, but that the paper might have to run down my whole block if I was going to be able to draw my planets at all. That morning left me with a glimpse of the grandeur of the universe and how tiny we are in comparison. I've never gotten over that.

 

The works represent a continuing obsession with this particular project - an unshakable urge to convey this sense of scale and wonder to the world.
